Frequently Asked Questions
Home Kill & Mobile Butchery for Sheep & Goats
Pig Home Slaughter will be added in 2026
Understanding Home Kill
What is mobile home kill?
Mobile home kill means we come directly to your smallholding to carry out humane on-farm slaughter for private household consumption.
Animals remain in familiar surroundings, avoiding transport stress, and we return to butcher your animal into freezer-ready cuts.

Is home kill legal in the UK?
Yes. Home kill is legal when:
The animal belongs to you
The meat is for your own household
A trained slaughterman performs the stun and kill
Livestock records are updated correctly

What does “humane slaughter” mean?
Humane slaughter means the animal is correctly stunned so it becomes unconscious immediately and cannot feel pain.
Calm handling and no transport reduce stress further.

Do sheep or goats feel pain during slaughter?
No. When performed correctly, the stun renders the animal unconscious instantly, so it cannot feel pain or fear.
Handling is kept quiet, controlled, and minimal at all times.
Is halal slaughter allowed during home kill?
No. UK law requires stunning before bleeding for home kill, so non-stun slaughter cannot be carried out.

Sheep vs Goat Home Kill
Is sheep home kill different from goat home kill?
Yes. Sheep are typically calmer, while goats can be more alert and agile.
Carcass shape and cutting preferences can differ, and we’ll talk you through the best options for your household.
Do you offer cooking advice?
Yes. Goat is naturally lean, while sheep varies by breed and age.
We can suggest the best cuts for roasting, slow cooking, mince, diced and stewing.
Legal Requirements & Paperwork
Do I need a licence for home kill?
No. You don’t need a licence to home kill your own livestock for your own household.
The slaughterman must hold the correct certification — which we do.
Can I sell or gift meat from home kill?
No. Home kill meat is for your own household only and cannot be sold or gifted outside your household.
What do I need to do for livestock movements?
For home slaughter, you record a death on the Livestock Information Service (LIS).

If you’re not sure what’s best for your holding, just call — we’ll talk it through.
What space do you need?
A quiet area with safe vehicle access and firm ground.
A clean water supply is helpful where available.

Support for Smallholders
Do you offer advice for first-time smallholders?
Yes. Many of our customers are doing this for the first time and want reassurance.
We explain each step clearly, and you’re always welcome to ask questions.
On the Day
Can I watch the slaughter?
Yes — if you choose to. Many people prefer not to, and that’s completely fine.
Your comfort matters, and we’ll work around what feels right for you.
Do you offer casualty and emergency slaughter?
Yes. We provide a 24/7 casualty and emergency slaughter service for livestock that cannot be transported safely.
Meat is only returned if it is fit for human consumption, assessed honestly on arrival.
What happens to waste and by-products?
Some by-products remain the smallholder’s responsibility under UK rules.
We’ll explain what applies to your situation and what your options are.
Which animals do you process?
We currently provide home kill services for sheep and goats.
Pig home kill services are planned for early 2026, subject to final qualification and certification.
Butchery & Meat
When do you return to butcher?
Typically, Day 1 slaughter and dressing, followed by Day 2 butchery into freezer-ready cuts.
Timings can vary depending on weather, access, and workload.
What cuts can I choose?
Roasting joints, chops, diced meat, stewing cuts — prepared to your requirements.
How much meat will I get?
This depends on breed, age, condition and finish.
If you tell us what you’re aiming for, we can give realistic guidance.
How is the meat packaged?
Clear, labelled, freezer-ready bags.
